How Renault keys work
Since 1996, Renault vehicles have been factory-fitted with an immobiliser system that prevents the vehicle from starting unless it receives the correct response from the Renault key or Renault key card. Each Renault key contains a transponder chip hidden within the key head. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the chip’s code is read by a coil located around the ignition barrel. The signal is then passed to the immobiliser and subsequently to the ECU, allowing the vehicle to start. In some Renault models, the immobiliser is a separate unit, while in others it is integrated into the Body Control Module (BCM). Some earlier Renault vehicles used an alternative immobiliser system that was deactivated via an infrared signal emitted from the remote key fob. Renault key cards, although different in appearance from traditional keys, operate in a similar manner to transponder keys. When the Renault key card is inserted into the dashboard reader, the signal from the transponder chip inside the card is detected, allowing the vehicle to start.
